Pure, white, and deadly

Nah, it’s not cocaine.  That was SOO 1980s.  Rather it’s something else:

Sugar.

Yep, you heard that right.  Those of you Manospherians out there who are into nutrition and stuff will know where I’m coming from.  But, you might not know about the following.

Robert Lustig is a pediatrician at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.  Hs speciality is in treating juvenile diabetes, which is alarming, all other things considered.  Along with the rising obesity problem in the US and the UK among adults, the problem has extended to chldren, and Lusting and his cohort are seeing it earlier and earlier.  Some of you 20-somethings who were fat as kids and struggling with your weight now, despite working out, would surely profit from watching these vids:

The first is Lustig’s primary lecture, which has been cited quite a lot and which put him on the road to mini-stardom as the man who has put his finger on the obesity problem.  Watch here;

The second vid is a BBC documentary that attempts (successfully, in my humble opinion) to find the root causes of the worldwide obesity epidemic.  As it’s a BBC documentary it focuses on the problem in the UK, though most of it is also applicable to the US.  Those of you who read my last post, about that British TV show, have noticed that the US is held to be the gold standard today for fat bastards and she-whales.  Watch here:

The third features Lustig again, but in a smaller web series that looks at sugar and the horrible processed food diet under the brighter light of a reinforcing problem.  To me, this shows the clear connections between our bad, processed diets and obesity — or, more properly, metabolic syndrome.  Watch here:

For the lazy out there, two things:

1.  Where we are today is the result of a perfect storm of political and economic events from the past 40 years or so.  People my age and older were around when these things happened, but had no control over them.  You 20-somethings and 30-somethings were affected by thise before you were even born, along with the rise of feminism and the emasculated male paradigm.

2.  Pay close attention to the web series when they talk about how the research has now shows that the roots of obesity are laid down in the wombWhat affects whether a child will become obese later on in life is the mother’s diet during pregnancy.  The fatter she is, the more likely her spawn will be.  For those of you who are thinking of having kids one day, this should be seared into your forebrain.  Mating with a she-whale who can’t lay off the Cheetos, booze, and venti caramel lattes means that you’re dooming your kids to be just like her.  Not cool.

Oh, and btw, the title of my post comes from the title of a book published by a Brit, John Yudkin, who concluded that sugar was the culprit for heart disease.  Watch the first two vids for more info.  Yudkin’s book has been out of print for a long time.  Hmmm . . . .
